Dien Kim is a coastal commune surrounded by the Lach Van River system with a length of more than 2 km, with the advantage of tidal flat potential. However, the nature of high tides will be more complicated if the wave-blocking system is not well built. Therefore, since receiving the Mangrove Planting and Disaster Prevention Project of the Japanese Red Cross Society, Dien Kim has quickly closed the area, done a good job of care and protection, in order to maximize the effectiveness of the mangrove forest system.
Mr. Nguyen Xuan Thuy - Chairman of Dien Kim Commune People's Committee said: "As the commune with the largest mangrove forest area in the district with 180 hectares, to ensure the existence and development of the forest, the most important thing is protection work. We have assigned 3 protection teams, each team has 3-5 people, in addition to patrolling and guarding against deforestation, every year the team also collaborates with some people to intercrop dead trees and sparse areas to close the entire area".
Mangrove forests not only protect sea dykes, reduce costs for regular dyke repairs and maintenance, but also provide aquatic resources for local people. It is estimated that each year, more than a thousand families benefit directly and permanently from the harvest of crabs, shrimps, etc.
Mr. Nguyen Hong Luu, a resident of Dien Kim, excitedly said: "Previously, there were no mangrove forests in Dien Kim, so people were very worried during the storm and flood season. Since this forest was created, people have benefited from exploiting seafood resources and have a clear understanding of the benefits of the forest, so their spirit and awareness of protection have been raised."
To have the green forests that bring economic efficiency as now, Dien Chau has encountered many difficulties, especially in implementing the project in 3 poor communes of Dien Bich, Dien Kim and Dien Van. Thanks to good propaganda and mobilization work, up to now, the whole district has 350 hectares of mangrove forest with mangrove and rhododendron trees with an average height of 2.5 to 5 meters.
With the goal of sustainably managing 350 hectares of mangrove forests, which means protecting the safety of the sea dyke system against storms and high tides, Dien Chau is focusing on all measures to mobilize the participation of local communities, and maximize the effectiveness of mangrove forests, protecting the lives of tens of thousands of people living in coastal areas here.
