Established in September 2010, the Hematology - Blood Transfusion Center (HCBT) has been in operation for a full year. (Baonghean.vn)Established in September 2010, the Hematology - Blood Transfusion Center (HCBT) has been in operation for a full year. Although it is a young unit with many difficulties in human resources, facilities, equipment, and operations dependent on objective factors such as blood supply, policies, etc., the Center has increasingly affirmed its necessity in the provincial health system.

Doctor Nguyen Hoang Cat - Deputy Director of the HH-TM Center, in a conversation with reporters, recounted a memory from the early days of the Center's establishment. It was a case of a pregnant woman from Ha Tinh with a rare blood type, who came to Nghe An General Hospital, fell into a state of postpartum hemorrhage and was in a critical condition, while the amount of blood in the bank did not meet the demand.

After a quick meeting with the determination to save the patient by all means between the leaders of Nghe An General Hospital and the Center, the patient's blood shortage was resolved. With a list of blood donors with the patient's blood type in hand, Dr. Cat immediately called 4 students from the College of Medicine (now Vinh Medical University).

These four students, who were doing their internship in another locality, were ready to take a motorbike taxi home at night, along with a faculty member who volunteered to donate blood to save lives.

Organizing the above mentioned blood banks is one of many activities of blood collection and supply that the Center has done very effectively. From here, many patients have escaped the hands of death, and hospitals have also been more proactive about blood sources.

In 2011, the Center was assigned the target of receiving and supplying 8,000 units of blood, but the Center set a target of 10,000 units. Up to now, the Center has enough basis to affirm that it will exceed the target. The Center has achieved and exceeded all other targets, such as implementing the professional target of specimens (testing work) reaching 142% of the plan, coordinating propaganda, expanding blood donation subjects among soldiers, workers, civil servants, rural youth, expanding blood donation areas, especially organizing collection in some mountainous districts, remote areas such as Anh Son, Nghia Dan... Conducting treatment of some diseases of blood and blood-forming organs as a premise for the development of the Clinical Department of Blood Diseases in 2013 with a scale of 20 beds. Although human resources are facing difficulties, the Center has also sent some staff for intensive training at the Central Institute of Blood and Blood Transfusion.

Many staff were sent to attend short-term training courses. Recently, the Center has also received a master and a technician from the Central level to transfer technology under the 1816 project. Thanks to that, the work of diagnosis, treatment and blood screening has made progress. In conjunction with the Provincial General Hospital, the Center has also organized training courses for lower levels in many testing techniques from 1 to 6 months, and organized training on blood transfusion safety for staff working in this field throughout the province.

At the National Conference on Blood Transfusion, Nghe An Blood Transfusion Center was ranked 13th nationwide in terms of effectiveness of blood transfusion work. For a young Center, this is an encouraging result, and the Center is striving to be in the "top 10". Investment in equipment for the Center is currently being implemented with bidding packages to be completed by the end of this year. Blood transfusion work will thus be upgraded to a new level, better meeting the needs of patients, ensuring more safety and savings.

Concerned about the work of blood donation in the province, Dr. Nguyen Van Huong - Director of the Center, Dr. Nguyen Hoang Cat - Deputy Director both acknowledged and wanted to expand the fixed blood donation points associated with health consultations that have been operating quite effectively in the past at Vinh University, voluntary blood donation clubs at Vinh University, University of Technical Education, Vinh University of Medicine... At the same time, they are moving towards establishing a rare blood type club to have the opportunity to help patients who unfortunately have blood diseases or need blood of rare types. Doctors also hope that the "Pink Spring Festival" held in February next year will attract thousands of people to register to donate blood.
