Nearly 200 workers at Haivina textile factory hospitalized for suspected food poisoning

(Baonghean) -Ten minutes after eating boxed lunches at the factory, nearly 200 workers of HaiVina Textile Company based in Nam Giang commune, Nam Dan district (Nghe An) showed symptoms of poisoning and had to be hospitalized.

The incident happened this afternoon, after eating lunch on December 8, some workers experienced symptoms such as headaches, dizziness, stomachaches, vomiting, convulsions and had to call medical staff. All workers were quickly taken to Nam Dan District General Hospital, Hung Nguyen District, and Kim Lien Commune Health Station for emergency care and intensive treatment. At Nam Dan District Hospital, more than 100 workers were packed into the Emergency and Anti-Poison Department, some with severe symptoms such as convulsions and circulatory collapse.

Some workers who suffered mild poisoning said that, like other days, after finishing their shift, they went to the cafeteria and were given boxed lunches with dishes such as braised fish, soup, tomatoes, pork, and pickles, etc. While eating, some workers discovered that their rice smelled sour, was mushy, and showed signs of spoilage. About 10 minutes after eating, the workers began to show signs of poisoning.

Nam Dan District Health Department officials said that the above boxed lunches were provided by 3 restaurants in Nam Dan District.

Immediately after the incident, Nghe An Department of Health set up working groups led by the Director and Deputy Director of the Department, along with the Center for Preventive Medicine, the Department of Food Safety and Hygiene, and doctors from the Provincial General Hospital to directly go to the factory and the locations where workers were being treated in emergency to implement treatment measures and find the cause of the above phenomenon. At Nam Dan District General Hospital, leaders of the Department of Health, leaders of Nam Dan District, and hospital representatives had an urgent meeting to discuss handling measures. The biggest requirement is to ensure the lives of hospitalized workers while not causing panic and anxiety for other workers.
