Thailand holds referendum on draft Constitution
Thai Parliament Speaker Somsak Kiatsuranont announced that the country will discuss the draft of a new constitution and expects to finalize it within a year before holding a referendum.
The statement comes as the ruling Puea Thai party and its allies in the "Red Shirt" movement plan to launch a constitutional amendment process, which they consider crucial for national reconciliation. However, the "Yellow Shirts" and groups split from the movement see it as a pretext to exonerate former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who is currently living in exile abroad.

According to Mr. Somsak, amending the Constitution is inevitable because the Puea Thai party raised the issue during last year's mid-election campaign. He stated that the draft Constitution will be put to a referendum, and the people will be the ones to give the final answer.
