(Baonghean.vn) - Born in 1990 in Nghi Xuan (Ha Tinh province), after attending amateur martial arts classes in Vinh, in 2006, Nguyen Van Duc was selected to join the Traditional Martial Arts class at the Nghe An Sports Training Center. From 2007 to the present, Duc has continuously brought many medals to Nghe An sports, including a bronze medal in Kick-boxing at the 2009 Asian Martial Arts Games held in Thailand after knocking out a very strong fighter from Kuwait. In 2011, Duc's competitive career began to mature when he won his first gold medal (69kg category) at the National Kick-boxing Championship, and simultaneously won a silver medal in Boxing.
Speaking about his precious gold medal, Duc said: "After overcoming other opponents to reach the final, I was a little nervous because my opponent in the final match was Dieu Van Sang, a very strong national team member from Dong Nai who had just won a silver medal at the Asian Muay Thai Championship. Moreover, Dieu Van Sang had knocked me out after only two rounds at the National Kick-boxing Club Cup held earlier this year in Dak Lak. However, thanks to the sound tactics of the coaches, especially Coach Bui Duy Vinh who directly encouraged me, I continuously scored points and won decisively 5-0 after three rounds to stand on the podium for the first time in the highest national kick-boxing tournament."
The match that Duc remembers most vividly is the one where he suffered a heavy defeat against Huynh A Ron from Ho Chi Minh City at the 2006 National Kick-boxing Club Cup in Vinh City.
That time, Duc had only been training in kickboxing for three months and it was his first time competing in a national-level tournament. Before the competition, Duc confidently promised his family and friends that he would win at least one medal to bring pride to himself. However, when he stepped into the ring, Duc was overwhelmed and flustered by his opponent's relentless attacks and was eliminated by Huynh A Ron in the first round without scoring a single point. From then on, he truly understood the advice of his coach, Bui Duy Vinh: "There is no easy and smooth path to glory. To succeed, you must have willpower, determination, and hard training."
