Kick-boxing is a martial art originating from Europe that has just been introduced to Vietnam in the last 3 years. This is a strong combat sport, developed from the foundation of boxing combined with techniques from many other martial arts, creating great appeal and quickly developing around the world.

In 2009, when Vietnam won the right to host the 3rd Asian Indoor Games, kick-boxing was one of the compulsory subjects in the competition program, so the Sports and Physical Training Committee had a policy to invest in developing this sport, and at the same time sponsored the boxing department to invite experts from the World Kick-boxing Federation (KWO) to train Vietnamese athletes to prepare for the 3rd AIG. Martial artist Bui Duy Vinh of Nghe An Sports Training Center was one of the first people sent by the Head of Vietnam Boxing Department Vu Duc Thinh to participate in a training course to acquire techniques, training methods and competition rules of kick-boxing to pass on and develop this sport nationwide.

Before the opening day of AIG 3, the Vietnamese kick-boxing team under the leadership of coach Bui Duy Vinh, including 5 athletes from Nghe An: Tran Thanh Tam, Nguyen Thi Thuy Vy, Nguyen Phi Long, Nguyen Van Duc, Ngo Quyet Thang along with 7 athletes from the following units: Ministry of Public Security, Binh Dinh, An Giang,... attended the first Asian Martial Arts Congress held in Bangkok (Thailand) and caused great surprises. Although they only trained for more than 1 month and participated in the international arena for the first time, the Vietnamese kick-boxing athletes defeated many opponents from countries with strong movements in this sport such as: Thailand, Iran, Uzbekistan, China, Kuwait, Kazakhstan,... bringing home 1 gold medal and 5 bronze medals. That resounding success created momentum for coach Bui Duy Vinh and his team to confidently participate in the big arena AIG 3 and excellently won 2 gold medals, 1 silver medal to the surprise of many world experts.

As head coach of ancient martial arts- boxing - kick-boxing of Nghe An Province Sports Training and Training Center, concurrently holding the position of Deputy of Technical Department, Member of Executive Committee of Vietnam Traditional Martial Arts Federation, promoting the knowledge and experience gained through training sessions and leading the National team to compete in major tournaments, within just 3 years, Coach Bui Duy Vinh has built for Nghe An a leading kick-boxing team in the country. In 2011, kick-boxing athletes brought home 15 medals of all kinds for Nghe An sports delegation, including 7 gold, 3 silver, 5 bronze. A number of Nghe An athletes have been called up to the National team to prepare for major tournaments, including the 4th Asian Indoor Games in early 2012.

Martial artist Bui Duy Vinh said: "Kick-boxing is a trendy sport, popular all over the world and very suitable for the qualities of Vietnamese people. Currently, kick-boxing is developing strongly in most continents and is included in the competition program of many major sports tournaments. The World Kick-boxing Federation is campaigning to include this attractive sport in the Olympic competition program. In terms of technique, kick-boxing has many similarities with traditional Vietnamese martial arts such as Vovinam, Nhat Nam, and traditional martial arts... This martial art requires agility, dexterity, and does not focus on strength or physical fitness, so we can completely invest in developing this sport to be able to compete in major playgrounds."
