Quynh Luu: Canal clogged with garbage

February 23, 2012 13:26

(Baonghean) - Quynh Luu - a district located at the end of the Ba Ra - Do Luong canal has for many years had to suffer from waste flowing from upstream, causing serious environmental pollution to the domestic water source of residents.

We went to Quynh Luu on cold days, on the Ba Ra - Do Luong canal in Quynh Thach commune, we saw many people using bamboo poles to collect trash. Mr. Nguyen HuuMale- Head of the Quynh Ba Irrigation Cluster (under the Quynh Luu Irrigation Enterprise) was upset: "Every day, the staff and employees of the Quynh Luu Irrigation Enterprise have to collect trash but they can't handle it all! The overflowing trash causes congestion in the entire siphon system". Mr. Nguyen Dinh Tuc, hamlet 8, Quynh Thach, complained: "The commune will soon build a water plant near this siphon, and we are very worried". Ms. Ho Thi Ha, in hamlet 8, who was herding buffalo in the field, took off her mask and said: "The stench is so strong that it blows into my village that I have to close the door all day but still can't stand it".

Quynh Doi commune has a domestic water plant with a capacity of more than 1,000 m3/day/night, serving 1,300 households, but it is located below a siphon sewer that is flooded with waste all year round. According to the reflection of many Quynh Doi residents: The water source is taken from the N26 canal, although it has been treated by the water plant, but with such serious waste pollution, we are still worried that the domestic water source cannot be guaranteed. The functional sectors need to inspect and have water samples tested for Quynh Doi Water Plant so that people can use safe water. Mr. Ho Quang Tuan added: In addition to polluting waste, it also clogs the siphon sewers, making it difficult to provide irrigation water during the dry season for 237 hectares of rice.

We followed the Ba Ra Do Luong canal up to Dien Chau, Yen Thanh districts... and observed that the entire siphon system was clogged with garbage. Along both sides of the river, garbage was thrown haphazardly, spilling into the canal. Ms. Tran Thi N in Xuan Thanh commune - Yen Thanh said: People usually go to the dike at night to dump garbage, some people dump on the bank, some people dump directly into the canal. It is known that many communes in Dien Chau, Do Luong, Yen Thanh districts... currently do not have a planned place to store garbage, so people just dump household waste carelessly into the canals, causing the siphon sewers to become clogged and seriously polluting the environment.

The waste also spread to other canals such as N13 canal flowing through the communes of Quynh Giang, Quynh My, Quynh Hoa. N14 canal flows through Quynh Ba, Son Hai, Quynh Ngoc, An Hoa. At the end of the main canal of Do Luong, Quynh Van, Quynh Thach, pumping station N17 irrigates Quynh Hong, Cau Giat, Quynh My... Faced with the above situation, Quynh Luu Irrigation Enterprise mobilized all its forces, in addition to operating and serving irrigation water for spring rice, to collect the waste.

It is already difficult to collect the garbage, the Enterprise also has to rent cars and tractors, every month 4 trips to take the garbage to the dump, each trip of garbage truck rents 500,000 VND. Quynh Luu Irrigation Enterprise is also responsible for irrigating over 7,000 hectares of rice, the current clogged siphon system will cause a water shortage at the end of the canal. We hope that the relevant agencies need to take measures to solve the problem of dumping garbage into the canal, causing pollution and obstructing the water flow."

Mr. Le Duc Cuong - Vice Chairman of Quynh Luu District People's Committee said: To overcome the problem of waste, in March 2012, Quynh Luu District People's Committee will approve the project to establish an administrative unit (Environmental Sanitation Company) to undertake the task of collecting waste and solving environmental sanitation in the whole district. The Environmental Sanitation Company has 1-2 specialized cars to transport waste from communes, siphon sewers, and gather all kinds of waste to the district's centralized waste dump for treatment.

The current issue is to strengthen propaganda work, raise awareness among people along Ba Ra Do Luong canal to limit littering into the canal and have strict measures to deal with those who intentionally litter into the canal.
