Coming to this tournament, Quang Liem is the defending champion and the 4th seed.

In the opening match, Quang Liem got his first point when he defeated home player Boris Savchenko after 32 moves.

Boris Savchenko was the champion of the 2009 Baku Open (Azerbaijan).

According to coach Lam Minh Chau's analysis, perhaps Boris Savchenko surprised Quang Liem in the opening, leading to a long thinking time and a wrong move, so Liem took full advantage.

This year's tournament takes place from February 7 to 15, with the prize for the A-class champion being 20,000 euros. This is considered one of the strongest and most rigorous open tournaments in the world today.

This year's tournament is still divided into three groups: Group A (for players with Elo above 2549), Group B (for players with Elo between 2299 - 2550), Group C (for players with Elo below 2300 or no Elo).
