(Baonghean.vn) -This morning, March 17, the People's Committee of Do Luong district held a meeting on the death of rice due to the use of plant protection chemicals in Hien Son commune, and agreed on how to overcome the consequences.

Also attending the meeting were leaders of the Provincial Plant Protection Department and Chairman of the People's Committee of Hien Son commune.

According to the report of the deputy director of Hien Son Cooperative, the Cooperative bought 50 bottles of ANCO 600-100mm herbicide from Mr. Duong Trong Phuong and then sold them to farmers to kill weeds in rice fields. The day after discovering poisoned rice in the fields, the Cooperative invited officers from the Plant Protection Station to advise on how to handle the situation. Currently, of the affected area of ​​7.7 hectares, 2.7 hectares have recovered, while 5 hectares are severely affected with shriveled rice and brittle leaves, at risk of crop failure.

The representative of the district Plant Protection Station also confirmed that the herbicide ANCO 600 is a highly toxic chemical that can kill many types of weeds in rice fields, but the disadvantage is that when used in low temperature environments below 20 degrees Celsius or at high concentrations, it will adversely affect rice plants. In fact, during the period of time when people used the drug from February 10-20, 2012, the temperature was below 20 degrees Celsius for many days, so consequences were inevitable.

Representative of the ANCO 600 herbicide production and supply unit, Mr. Ho Manh Hung, Branch Director of An Giang Plant Protection Joint Stock Company, expressed his regret for the risk that occurred and promised to responsibly share the risk with farmers, and in the immediate future, provide specific drugs to restore the infected rice area.

At the end of the working session, authorized by the district leaders, Mr. Tran Manh Hung - Head of the Department of Agriculture assigned responsibility to An Giang Plant Protection Joint Stock Company Vinh Branch, Hien Son Agricultural Cooperative, Mr. Duong Trong Phuong to coordinate in checking statistics, classifying the level of damaged rice area, coordinating with specialized agencies (Department of Agriculture, Plant Protection Station, Agricultural Extension Station) to find solutions to detoxify, replant, and quickly restore damaged rice areas. If at the end of the season, the yield of rice fields contaminated by herbicide spraying is lower than the average, the Cooperative, An Giang Plant Protection Joint Stock Company and Mr. Duong Trong Phuong must be responsible for supporting the shortage for the people.
