According to Xinhua News Agency, paleontologists say they have discovered several hundred fossilized dinosaur footprints at a geological park in Yanqing County, on the outskirts of Beijing, China.

Paleontologist Zhang Jianping from the China University of Geosciences said these are the first dinosaur footprints ever found in the city. According to Zhang, these footprints belong to dinosaurs from the Jurassic period, dating back 140-150 million years.

A team of scientists from the China University of Geosciences first discovered these footprints in July 2011 at Guihuamu Geopark, a renowned center for ancient fossils.

In one area where most of the footprints converged, paleontologists counted several hundred footprints as well as 7-8 rows formed from consecutive footprints.

These footprints are believed to belong to thyreophora, theropod (large carnivorous dinosaur), ornithopod (bird-footed dinosaur), and possibly sauropod (lizard) dinosaurs.

Zhang asserted that the discovery would enrich China's collection of dinosaur fossils from the late Jurassic and early Cretaceous periods.

He said: "This is the first time China has discovered footprints of thyreophora, theropod, ornithopod, and possibly sauropod from that period, which helps us better understand how these species migrated through China."
