On March 1, Russia accused the United States of trying to influence the country's election process by financially supporting opposition groups ahead of the presidential election on March 4.

In an interview with the Rossiyskaya Gazeta newspaper, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov made the above harsh criticism, accusing the US of "copying" the Cold War model and trying to raise its voice against Russia.

"The days when Russia could be lectured or lectured are over," Lavrov said. "Our American partners understand this quite well, but the stagnation of old approaches and stereotypes in Washington remain evident. We resolutely counter attempts to influence the political and electoral process in Russia, including through financial support for civil society groups."

Previously, Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin also accused the US State Department of inciting protests on the streets of Moscow after the State Duma (Lower House) elections in December 2011 as well as ahead of the upcoming presidential election./.
