Iran announces design and construction of nuclear submarine
On June 12, Deputy Commander in charge of technology of the Iranian Navy, Admiral Abbas Zamini, said that Iran has taken the "first steps" to design and build the country's first nuclear submarine.
In an interview with Fars news agency, Admiral Damini stated that the design and manufacture of propulsion systems for nuclear submarines has begun.

Zamini stressed that the Iranian Navy "needs a (nuclear-powered) propulsion system to successfully carry out long-range operations," and asserted that all countries have the right to use nuclear technology for peaceful purposes. However, Zamini did not give further details.
This statement was made in the context that the P5+1 group (including the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council, the US, Russia, the UK, France and China, along with Germany) is preparing to hold a new round of negotiations with Iran in Moscow, Russia, on June 18-19 regarding Tehran's controversial nuclear program.
Previously, on May 24, the nuclear talks between the two sides ended in the Iraqi capital Baghdad without any breakthrough.
Iran often exaggerates its military and scientific achievements, and Western military experts are often skeptical of Iran's claims. So far, only a few countries, including the United States, Russia, France, Britain and China, have the technology to build their own nuclear submarines.
The United Nations has so far imposed four rounds of sanctions on Iran over suspicions that the country is trying to build nuclear weapons through technological development and uranium enrichment activities. The US, the European Union (EU) and several other countries are also imposing embargoes on Iran's banks, financial institutions and oil industry to pressure Tehran to return to the negotiating table./.
