(Baonghean.vn) -From April 13th to 18th, more than 20 students at Nguyen Du High School (Dien Chau district, Nghe An province) exhibited unexplained crying and laughing, and fainted in large numbers. This situation caused great concern among parents and students.

The incident began on April 13th with some female 10th-grade students, and on subsequent days, 5-7 students each day exhibited similar symptoms.

A student who fainted is being treated at the school's infirmary.

Following the incident, the school placed the students in an isolation room to rest, provided massages, prepared ginger tea, and assigned a medical officer from Phu Dien General Hospital to be on standby at the school in case of any complications. Thanks to this thorough preparation, from the morning of April 17th to April 18th, the number of students fainting in large numbers showed signs of decreasing.

Although no official conclusion has been reached, according to Mr. Cao Huu Ngai, the school principal: Initial examinations by doctors have confirmed that this is a normal psychological phenomenon, medically known as Hysteria - a neuropsychiatric disorder with psychological origins, often occurring in females with weak, unbalanced, and inflexible nervous systems. The school has coordinated with health authorities to educate and explain to parents to stabilize their concerns, assuring them that it is not a contagious bacterial disease and therefore students should not worry about it spreading widely.

Currently, the number of students fainting in large numbers has decreased. On the morning of April 19th, a delegation from the Department of Education and Training and the Department of Health visited the school to investigate the issue and discuss long-term treatment measures. The inspection confirmed that the cause was hysteria.

Mr. Nguyen Trong Hoan, Deputy Chief of the Office of the Department of Education, assessed: This is not a dangerous disease, but it often occurs in a chain reaction. Therefore, schools need to pay close attention and thoroughly educate students, especially at the end of the school year, during hot weather, and when students are under a lot of pressure from exams.
