A military official who asked not to be named said that for the past two weeks, government forces have surrounded the town of Zinjibar, the capital of Abyan province, which is believed to be the "headquarters" of Al-Qaeda.

Fierce fighting broke out after government troops attacked Al-Qaeda hideouts in the town. In addition to killing many Al-Qaeda members, government troops also captured many of them and seized a large amount of weapons and ammunition.

The security situation in Yemen has recently become unstable after a suicide bombing targeting military forces in the capital Sana on May 21, killing more than 90 soldiers. This is the bloodiest violence since Yemeni President Mansour Hadi took office last February.
