State news agency Lana said the armed group attacked the airport to pressure the ruling National Transitional Council (NTC) in Libya to clarify the disappearance of Colonel Abu al-Hebeishi, commander of the Al-Awfea brigade.

Meanwhile, in the city of Benghazi, eastern Libya, on the evening of June 4, fighting broke out between police and an armed group.

Gunmen attacked a police station after a member of the armed group was shot dead in the area. There were no immediate reports of casualties in the fighting.

The incidents occurred two weeks before Libya's first general election since 1969, scheduled for June 19.

Recently, officials in the Libyan government as well as the electoral commission have made statements mentioning the possibility of postponing the election due to the current unstable situation in the country./.
