UN and AL urge peaceful solution in Syria
United Nations and Arab League (AL) Special Envoy Kofi Annan arrived in the Syrian capital Damascus on May 28, calling on the conflicting parties to take concrete actions towards a viable political process to end the violence.
In a statement, Mr. Annan also condemned the massacre in the village of Houla in central Syria, which killed more than 90 people. Former UN Secretary-General Annan said this was a horrifying crime and those who committed this crime must be severely punished.

He called on the Syrian Government to take concrete measures to demonstrate its determination to resolve the crisis peacefully and called on all parties involved to support the political process. The UN-AL Special Envoy made it clear that this message of peace is for all factions in Syria.
According to the plan, during this visit, Mr. Annan will have a meeting and "frank and serious" discussion with Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad about new developments in this Middle Eastern country. In addition, Mr. Annan is also expected to meet with senior Syrian officials, representatives of opposition groups and social organizations in this country.
Special Envoy Annan's visit comes amid continuing severe violence in Syria, which has left more than 100 people dead in recent days.
In a related development, a VNA correspondent in Moscow quoted Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov's statement at a joint press conference with British Foreign Secretary Wuyliam Hague, who is visiting Russia, saying that Moscow is not satisfied with the progress and results of implementing the peace plan proposed by UN-AL Special Envoy Kofi Annan to resolve the conflict in Syria.
Russia is concerned about the recurrence of massacres of civilians like the one in the village of Houla in Syria recently and does not rule out the possibility that someone is behind the instigation, showing that the proposed goal of peacefully resolving the conflict in Syria is still very far away.
Russia believes that the international community also needs to outline additional mechanisms to implement this peace plan on the basis of ensuring the sovereignty and territorial integrity of independent Syria, ensuring the right of the Syrian people to decide their own fate./.
