The world's oldest person turns 116.

Mrs. Besse Cooper, currently the world's oldest living person, turned 116 on August 26th.



According to the Guinness World Records organization, Besse Cooper, from Georgia (USA), is the eighth person in the world and the fourth in the United States to be recognized as having reached this age.


Mr. Cooper was born on August 26, 1896, in Sullivan, northern Tennessee—the same year as comedian George Burns and writer F. Scott Fitzgerald. In 1917, during World War I, Mr. Besse moved there.GeorgiaShe worked as a teacher. Later, she married Luther Cooper and had four children: Angie, Luther,SydneyandNancyIn 1963, Luther passed away at the age of 68; his wife never remarried.


In January 2011, Mr. Cooper was recognized by the Guinness World Records as the world's oldest living person. However, he had to relinquish this title to Mrs. Maria Gomes Valentin, who was born 48 days before Mr. Cooper.

On June 21, 2011, when Valentin passed away at the age of 115, Cooper was once again honored as the world's oldest living person.




Mrs. Besse has 12 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. On August 24th, Walton County officials also held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for a bridge named after her to honor her enduring vitality. The bridge, built on New Hope Road across the Alcovy River in central Georgia, is near where Mrs. Cooper was a teacher in her youth.


When asked about the secret to her longevity, the elderly woman shared: "I eat a lot of vegetables and never snack."

To date, the oldest person in the world is recognized as Jeane Calmet, a French woman who lived to be 122 years old. She was born in 1875 and died in 1997.
