Roadside bomb kills five Thai police officers
AFP news agency quoted a police source as saying that on July 25, a roadside bomb exploded in Raman district of Yala province (Southern Thailand), killing five police officers and seriously injuring one.
The bomb was planted near a bridge in Raman as six policemen were passing through the area in a pickup truck. The explosion caused the truck to overturn into a canal, killing four of the policemen instantly. A fifth died while being taken to hospital.
Immediately after the bombing, the gunmen seized dozens of guns, including pistols and machine guns. The police were deployed there to protect teachers, who are often targeted by militants.
Since 2004, bomb and gun attacks have frequently occurred in the three southern provinces of Pattani, Narathiwat and Yala. These attacks often target soldiers, civilians, Buddhists and Muslims and have so far killed about 5,000 people./.
