Venezuelan authorities said on the morning of August 25, a large gas explosion occurred at the country's largest oil refinery Amuay, killing at least 7 people and injuring 48.

According to local officials, the explosion was caused by a gas leak and caused severe damage to the Amuay factory and nearby homes.

Rescue workers were quickly deployed to the scene, where smoke and flames could be seen rising above the plant. However, the situation at the plant was brought under control a few hours later and there is no danger of further explosions.

Amuay is Venezuela's largest refinery with a capacity of 645,000 barrels of oil per day, located in western Venezuela, South America's largest oil exporter and a member of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).

The plant, owned by Venezuela's state-owned oil company PDVSA, is part of the Paraguana Refinery Center, one of the world's largest refining complexes with a total capacity of 955,000 barrels per day./.
