On October 12th, information from the People's Committee of Dakrong commune (Dakrong district, Quang Tri province) indicated that a large volume of water unexpectedly flowing from upstream caused the dam of the Dakrong III hydroelectric project to break, sweeping away tens of tons of newly harvested cassava and causing significant losses to the local people.

The Dakrong III hydroelectric dam has broken.

Earlier, the Dakrong Commune Flood Control Committee noticed an unusually large volume of water rushing from upstream towards the hydroelectric dam at 8:00 AM on October 7th. Upon inspection, it was discovered that the dam of the Dakrong III hydroelectric project, located in Ta Long commune, had broken.

The initial cause of the dam breach was determined to be the impact of prolonged heavy rains in early October 2012. The large volume of water that flowed in due to the breach swept away tens of tons of newly harvested cassava belonging to more than 15 households in the two communes of Ta Long and Dakrong, causing significant losses to the local people.

According to Mr. Ho Nha, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Dakrong commune, four days after the dam broke, as of yesterday afternoon, October 11th, the incident had still not been resolved, and the people's losses had not yet been compensated.
