"Will restore the Forbidden City to see the palace of a dynasty"

After 2 months of excavation, the archaeological team of the Vietnam Institute of Archaeology confirmed that the space of the Forbidden City has a rectangular plan in the north-south direction, 312 m long, 126 m wide, an area twice as large as previously published documents.

On the afternoon of November 23, the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Binh Dinh province organized the announcement of the results of the archaeological excavation of the Forbidden City - Imperial Citadel (in Nhon Hau commune, An Nhon town, Binh Dinh) of the Tay Son dynasty.

Accordingly, as a result of the excavation, the Archaeological Team discovered new discoveries, the Forbidden City has a rectangular plan in the North - South direction, with a length of 312 m, a width of 126 m, an area twice as large as previously published documents.

The Forbidden City is divided into two unequal parts, separated by a short wall. The southern part has relics such as: the working houses of the Tay Son dynasty mandarins, the Octagonal Palace, the decorative water lake, etc. In addition, there is a rockery and ornamental plants that still exist today. The northern part is narrower than the southern part, but now only traces of the old foundation, the harem foundation remain... this is the living space of Emperor Nguyen Nhac's family.

The citadel was built mainly with materials such as Champa bricks, Tay Son period bricks and tiles... The ceramics and porcelain in the citadel also have many origins such as from China, from the Champa period, Vietnamese ceramics, earthenware...

According to Dr. Le Dinh Phung - Head of the Historical Archaeology Department of the Vietnam Institute of Archaeology, in charge of the excavation, said: "With the discovered vestiges, there are enough conditions and scientific basis to protect and restore the Forbidden City to see more clearly the Royal Palace space of a dynasty in history".
