According to incomplete statistics, sectarian violence in Rakhine state since June has killed at least 90 people, injured hundreds, destroyed over 3,000 houses and forced 75,000 people to flee their homes.

The state government had to declare a state of emergency and a curfew.

Tensions in Rakhine have flared after a Buddhist woman was sexually assaulted and murdered by three Muslim men, raising fears of a humanitarian crisis in the region.

In the face of the resurgence of religious violence in western Myanmar, the United Nations has expressed "deep concern" and called on all parties involved to exercise restraint and remain calm to restore order in the region. The US also asked the Myanmar government to take immediate action to end the violence./.
