Meiji powdered milk contains radioactive substances
Meiji, a major Japanese food company, yesterday proactively informed the media about the situation of "Meiji STEP" powdered milk (850gr type) containing radioactive cesium.
Although the level of 30.8 becquerels/kg (international unit of radioactivity) did not exceed the limit set by the Japanese government, Meiji Corporation planned to exchange 40,000 boxes of this powdered milk free of charge.
According to Japanese media reports, this is the first time cesium has been detected in milk powder since the nuclear power plant accident. The Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare has immediately joined the investigation.
A statement on Meiji's official website said that the powdered milk tested for cesium was sold nationwide. The powdered milk was produced by Meiji's Kasukabe plant. The cow's milk used to make the powdered milk was produced before the Fukushima nuclear accident. Meiji suspects that cesium in the atmosphere may have been mixed in during the drying process.
Meiji said that after mixing with water, the concentration of cesium can be reduced to 3-4 becquerels, even if used every day, it will not affect health, but the company agreed to exchange other products to remove consumer skepticism.
Affected by this information, Meiji shares fell 9.72%. China was not affected by this because Meiji milk powder sold in large supermarkets and dealer channels has changed due to
