The plan for the 2013 brackish water shrimp farming season is to stock 655,000 hectares (615,000 hectares of black tiger shrimp and 40,000 hectares of white-leg shrimp), with an estimated output of about 530,000 tons.
Mr. Pham Anh Tuan - Deputy Director General of the Directorate of Fisheries said that 2012 was a difficult year, brackish water shrimp farming was seriously affected by widespread diseases. The total damaged shrimp area was about 100,776 hectares, including 91,174 hectares of black tiger shrimp and 7,068 hectares of white-leg shrimp, causing great economic losses.
Soc Trang is the province with the largest damaged shrimp area with 23,371 hectares, accounting for 56.6% of the farming area; Bac Lieu has 16,919 hectares damaged; Tra Vinh has 12,200 hectares damaged, accounting for nearly 50% of the farming area; Ca Mau has more than 958 hectares of industrial shrimp damaged, an increase of nearly 50% compared to 2011.
Therefore, for the 2013 shrimp crop to be successful, the Directorate of Fisheries recommends that provinces conduct a general quality check of biological products used in shrimp production, strictly prohibit the production and trading of products that do not ensure quality, and widely inform shrimp farmers. In particular, strictly control the quality of shrimp seeds.

Of which, the area for raising black tiger shrimp was 619,255 hectares, a decrease of 7.1%; output of 298,607 tons, a decrease of 6.5%; white-leg shrimp was 38,169 hectares, an increase of 15.5%; output of 117,817 tons, an increase of 3.2%. The Mekong Delta region alone is the main brackish water shrimp farming area of the country with an area of 595,723 hectares, and an output of 358,477 tons. The country has 1,529 facilities producing black tiger shrimp seeds, with an output of more than 37 billion seeds, and 185 facilities producing white-leg shrimp seeds with an output of nearly 30 billion seeds.
