Discover the advantages of DNA testing from saliva

Researchers at the University of Western Australia recently announced that they have found a superiority in DNA testing from saliva samples compared to DNA testing from blood samples.

The advantage lies in the preservation stage. Previous studies have shown that saliva samples can contain the same amount of DNA as blood samples. However, the problem is how to preserve the test samples for a long time.

To answer this question, Dr. Robert Anthonappa and colleagues collected 10 blood samples and 50 saliva samples from study participants, isolated DNA immediately upon collection and at various times afterward, and stored the samples under different conditions.

Test results showed that while blood samples must be refrigerated and DNA must be extracted within 24 hours, saliva can be stored at 37°C for up to 18 months without any loss of useful DNA.
