Ms. Kerry Nguyen Long is not an expert in Vietnamese fine arts, but images of bronze drums, dragons from the Ly and Tran dynasties, or decorative patterns on the roofs of Vietnamese communal houses and pagodas attracted her more than 20 years ago.

With more than 300 illustrations, the book “Vietnamese Art from 1009 to 1945” introduces domestic readers and especially international friends to the quintessence of Kinh culture. The book has 13 chapters, each chapter is a historical period approached by the author from the perspective of art, history and culture. She also devoted the last 3 chapters to present Nguyen Dynasty fine arts with the content: royal fine arts, folk fine arts and the intervention of the French in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and its consequences for Vietnamese fine arts.
At the press conference to launch her work, Ms. Kerry Nguyen Long shared that she began her research on Vietnamese art when she lived in the Philippines. She lived there for 20 years and discovered that many Vietnamese ceramic and porcelain works were exported to this country from the 14th and 15th centuries. The longest and most difficult process for her when writing this book was learning about Vietnamese history because when writing about the art of a country, one must understand the history of that country.
“Vietnamese Art from 1009 to 1945” was published with support from the Australian Embassy to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Australia-Vietnam diplomatic relations./.
