The Vietnam Association of Seafood Processing and Export (Vasep) forecasts that seafood production and exports in 2013 will face many difficulties due to a decrease in import value from major markets such as the US, EU, Japan, and South Korea.

Shrimp export revenue in 2013 could reach US$2.4 billion, a 6.5% increase compared to 2012, if four challenges that existed in 2012 are successfully addressed: disease outbreaks, competition from Chinese traders for raw shrimp, market access, and the Ethoxyquin barrier.

In 2012, seafood export turnover increased only slightly, and seafood exports are facing many obstacles that could affect export turnover in 2013.

The total value of seafood exports in 2012 reached only about US$6.15 billion, an increase of 0.7% compared to 2011, but only 94.2% of the planned target.
