According to Kyodo News, on the night of October 20, the Japanese Coast Guard (JCG) received an alert from Taiwanese authorities about a fire on the Ming Yang cargo ship in waters 150km southeast of the Okinawa Islands. The JCG immediately dispatched patrol boats and aircraft to the scene. First, they rescued 21 sailors from life rafts, then 43 people still on the burning ship. Japanese rescue workers said that only a few sailors suffered minor burns. There was no information about the fate of the ship in distress.

Observers noted Japan's urgent assistance to the Chinese sailors, despite tense relations between the two countries due to territorial disputes.
