With a consumption of 5.1 billion packets of instant noodles in 2012, Vietnam ranked 4th in the world. The three largest consumers were China, Indonesia, and Japan.

According to the World Instant Noodle Association in Osaka, Japan, the global instant noodle business has reached 101.4 billion packets of noodles annually, with the three largest consumers being China, Indonesia, and Japan.
China (including Hong Kong) leads the world with consumption of 44 billion packets of instant noodles, followed by Indonesia with 14.1 billion packets, and Japan with 5.4 billion packets. Vietnam ranks fourth with consumption of 5.1 billion packets of instant noodles in 2012.
Instant noodles were invented by a Japanese businessman, Momofuku Ando, who also founded the instant noodle company Nissin Foods in 1958.
