Two of the three suspects are students, and one of them is American.

Boston city officials said the three individuals were arrested on the morning of May 2nd (Vietnam time) on charges of obstructing an investigation and making false statements. Two of them, Azamat Tazhayakov and Dias Kadyrbayev, are Kazakh nationals, while the third, Robel Phillipos, is a US citizen.

According to investigators, the suspects are accused of destroying evidence by throwing a backpack containing fireworks and a laptop belonging to suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev into a garbage dump. An investigator stated that after the FBI released photos of the Tsarnaev brothers, Dzhokhar contacted all three and asked them to destroy the evidence. Not only did Phillipos help Dzhokhar destroy the evidence, but he also lied in response to several FBI questions.

Tazhayakov and Kadyrbayev had previously taken photos with Dzhokhar Tsarnaev in Times Square in New York and were detained last month on charges of violating student visa regulations. One reason police took notice was that Kadyrbayev and suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev changed their profile pictures on their personal Facebook accounts 15 minutes apart in the early morning of April 19th, while the Tsarnaev brothers were still in hiding.

According to sources from the investigation, Dzhokhar accessed Facebook via a Wi-Fi device and changed his wallpaper to black and white, while Kadyrbayev changed his current wallpaper to a different image.

If convicted, Kadyrbayev and Tazhayakov face sentences of up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine, while Phillipos faces a potential sentence of up to eight years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

Following the Boston bombing that killed three people and injured nearly 180, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was arrested while his brother, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, died in a shootout with police. According to polls by the Washington Post and ABC News, 70% of Americans support the death penalty for Dzhokhar Tsarnaev.
