This action violates Security Council resolutions 1718, 1874, and 2078, and threatens the peace and stability of the international community.

On the evening of February 12th (Vietnam time), at an emergency meeting in New York (USA), the United Nations Security Council strongly condemned the third nuclear test of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea and pledged to take retaliatory measures against Pyongyang's actions.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, South Korean Foreign Minister Kim Sung-hwan, whose country currently holds the presidency of the Security Council for the month of February, said: “The Security Council members held emergency consultations regarding North Korea’s third nuclear test. The Security Council members strongly condemn this nuclear test. This is a violation of Security Council resolutions 1718 of 2006, 1874 of 2009, and 2078 of 2013, and threatens the peace and stability of the international community.”

At the meeting, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon stated that North Korea's actions constitute "a serious challenge to the world's efforts to prevent nuclear proliferation. North Korea is the only country to have conducted a nuclear test since the beginning of the 21st century. The North Korean regime should not harbor the illusion that nuclear weapons will make them safer. On the contrary, pursuing the ambition of possessing nuclear weapons will only make them more insecure and more isolated."

Meanwhile, US Ambassador to the United Nations Susan Rice said North Korea would face “increasing pressure and isolation.”

For its part, North Korea asserts that it will never yield to "unreasonable" international resolutions against its nuclear program. North Korea argues that the prospects for denuclearizing the Korean Peninsula are being undermined by US hostility.
