The patient is Ms. Le Thi Tam (residing in Cai Khe ward, Ninh Kieu district, Can Tho city); admitted to the hospital on March 11 with chest pain, fatigue, prolonged shortness of breath, dizziness, and difficulty eating.
Through diagnosis, doctors discovered that the patient's heart rate was 37 beats/minute, a junctional rhythm. After that, the patient's heart rate was monitored for 24 hours, the results recorded that the patient had sinus arrest for more than 3 seconds with a junctional rhythm. The patient was diagnosed with sick sinus syndrome.
Coronary angiography (to diagnose ischemic heart disease) was performed, and the patient's right coronary artery (P) was found to be 70% narrowed. Because the patient was old, he had comorbidities such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, ischemic heart disease, and valvular heart disease. After that, the doctors recommended that patient Tam receive active medical treatment.
Patient Tam was treated with Internal Medicine but the heart rate did not respond to treatment. After that, the patient was indicated for surgery to insert a dual-chamber pacemaker. The surgery was performed by a team of doctors from the Ho Chi Minh City Heart Institute and the Interventional Cardiology Unit - Hoan My Cuu Long General Hospital in 1 hour. The very small dual-chamber pacemaker was placed under the patient's left collarbone, with the function of keeping the patient's heart rate normal.
According to Hoan My Cuu Long Can Tho General Hospital: The procedure of implanting a dual-chamber pacemaker under the skin does not cause blood loss, so there is no need for a blood transfusion during surgery. A dual-chamber pacemaker has a lifespan of 9-10 years.
After having a pacemaker inserted, patient Le Thi Tam's health has completely recovered and the hospital has completed the discharge procedures./.
