Earlier in the day, more than 50,000 protesters poured into Taksim Square in central Istanbul, amid a five-day wave of protests against the government's demolition of Gezi Park along Taksim Square to build a commercial area. The protesters demanded the resignation of Prime Minister Erdogan's government.
Protests quickly spread across the country after police on May 31 used tear gas and water cannons to disperse crowds, injuring dozens and arresting 63 people.
Prime Minister Erdogan has called for an "immediate end to violent protests" and admitted that police had made mistakes in some cases by using excessive force. He has also promised to open an investigation into officers who acted "inappropriately" against protesters.
However, Mr. Erdogan affirmed that despite the widespread protests and considered the biggest challenge to his government in the past decade in power, the government is determined to carry out the plan to redevelop Gezi Park.
Turkish President Abdullah Gul on June 1 called on the government and protesters to end the prolonged tensions in Istanbul and across the country over plans to demolish Gezi Park and the police's excessive use of force to suppress protesters.
In a statement, President Abdullah Gul called on protesters to exercise restraint and act within the law, while authorities should try to listen to the people's opinions and forces should act appropriately when carrying out their duties./.
