North Korea appoints its army chief of staff.

According to AP, the North Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) on May 22nd released images showing North Korean leader Kim Jong Un appointing hardline General Kim Kyok Sik as the new Chief of the General Staff of the army.

Information regarding Kim Kyok Sik's promotion was released in a May 22nd KCNA news report about a delegation seeing off a special envoy to China at Pyongyang airport. However, KCNA did not provide further details about the appointment.

Kim Kyok Sik previously served as Chief of Staff of the Army until 2009. He also served as Minister of Defense until recently, when he was transferred to a less well-known position.

Kim Kyok Sik commanded the battalions believed to have carried out the 2010 attacks that killed 50 South Koreans.

In North Korea, the position of Chief of the General Staff of the Army is considered higher than that of the Minister of Defense.
