Below are some common eye symptoms detected by ophthalmologists and what they may reveal about your health.

Red eyes: High blood pressure

When an ophthalmologist shines a light into your eye, they will see the tiny blood vessels in the retina. High blood pressure can cause these blood vessels to appear twisted—or even make the eye appear red.

Statistics show that one-quarter of adults with high blood pressure are unaware they have the condition.

Small yellow spots in the retina: Diabetes

Small yellow droplets in the retina are a sign ofdiabetesType 2. Early diagnosis of the disease is crucial to avoid potential complications.

White ring around the pupil: High cholesterol

A white ring around the iris, or a hazy white spot around the eyelids, is a sign of high cholesterol levels. Studies show that people with these symptoms are at a higher risk of heart disease.

Pale inner eyelids: Anemia

If the inside of your eyelids looks pale when pulled down, you may be anemic. Anemia can be treated with iron supplements.

Bulging eyes: Indicates a thyroid problem.

Protruding eyes can be hereditary, but they can also be evidence of...thyroid glandOveractivity. Abnormal levels of thyroid hormones cause the tissues around the eyes to swell.

Yellow eyes: Liver disease

Hepatitis and cirrhosis can turn the whites of the eyes yellow. This yellowing is due to a chemical called bilirubin, which is produced by the breakdown of hemoglobin—the oxygen-carrying molecule inside red blood cells.
