The massive storm not only generated tornadoes that struck Oklahoma City and its surroundings, but also brought widespread heavy rain across Oklahoma and Missouri. Television showed streets turned into rivers, with water flooding up to car windows.
The National Weather Service (NWS) reported on May 31 that the severe storm generated its first tornado in El Reno before striking Oklahoma City. Additionally, at least four other tornadoes with winds exceeding 100 km/h formed in Oklahoma and surrounding areas.
The storm then moved to Missouri. Reuters reported that Missouri Governor Jay Nixon recently urged residents to avoid driving through flooded areas. “The rivers are overflowing, so we urge everyone to be vigilant. The situation remains very dangerous,” Nixon emphasized.
Approximately 200,000 people remain without power in Oklahoma and Missouri. Authorities say the tornadoes did not devastate Oklahoma as severely as the one two weeks ago, which killed 24 people.
