The US is moving towards military intervention in Syria

The Pentagon has said it is ready to intervene militarily in Syria if ordered.

President Barack Obama is considering military intervention in Syria, and the Pentagon has prepared various scenarios for doing so.

General Martin Dempsey, Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, said that the Obama administration considered whether to intervene militarily in Syria during a Senate hearing on July 18.

“The issue is being discussed by government agencies,” General Dempsey told the AP news agency in Washington.

Last month, the Obama administration concluded that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's military used chemical weapons in the ongoing civil war.

“According to intelligence, between 100 and 150 people have died from chemical weapons attacks in Syria so far. However, this number may be incomplete,” said Deputy National Security Adviser Ben Rhodes.

President Obama has said that evidence of the Syrian government’s use of chemical weapons could cross a “red line” that would change the US approach to Syria. However, the US President has also asserted that he needs more specific, more accurate information about what happened.

Rhodes said Washington was working with its allies to produce “credible evidence.” If it is ultimately determined that the Assad regime used chemical weapons, the United States would provide strong political and military support to the opposition.

However, Mr. Rhodes's statement has met with much controversy. The Syrian Foreign Ministry called the conclusions about the use of chemical weapons in Syria a lie. Meanwhile, the Russian Ambassador to the United Nations has presented evidence showing that it was the opposition forces that used chemical weapons in the war.

Regarding foreign intervention in Syria, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said: “Providing weapons to both sides will not solve the current situation.”

Kentucky Senator Rand Paul and his father, former Texas congressman Ron Paul, have also issued warnings to the White House over its support for Syrian rebels.

“Helping Syrian rebels is tantamount to funding al-Qaeda allies,” said Senator Rand Paul.

Meanwhile, Admiral James Winnefeld - General Dempsey's deputy, said: "There are a variety of different options that have been put forward. If the time comes to act, we will be ready."

The Pentagon has been constantly updating the White House on military options regarding the situation in Syria. General Dempsey’s recent statement is the clearest evidence that the US is considering a direct intervention campaign in the bloody conflict in this country./.
