Nguyen Tien Minh won a ticket to the quarter-finals of the US Open Grand Prix Gold 2013 with a 2-1 victory (21-16, 12-21 and 21-8) over Chun Seang Tan of Malaysia.

This is also the fifth victory that Vietnam's number 1 tennis player has had after 7 times facing Chun Seang Tan.

Unlike the two easy matches against Andres Lopez and Calvin Lin, Tien Minh encountered much more difficulty because his Malaysian opponent understood his playing style too well.

Therefore, Tien Minh had to work very hard to win 21-16 in the first set. In the second set, Chun Seang Tan played better and won against Tien Minh with a score of 21-12.

In the deciding set, the Malaysian player started better and took a 2-1 lead. However, Tien Minh quickly regained his inspiration and scored 16 consecutive points to take a 17-2 lead.

With such a big gap, despite trying very hard, all Chun Seang Tan could do was score 6 more points before accepting defeat with a final difference of 8-21.

Winning 21-16, 12-21 and 21-8, Tien Minh has booked his place in the quarterfinals and his next opponent will be world No. 64, Sattawat Pongnairat of the US.
