On July 11, Luxembourg Prime Minister Jean-Claude Juncker announced his resignation due to the wiretapping scandal involving the country's secret service.

The decision was made after the Socialist Party, a member of the ruling coalition, called for the dissolution of Parliament and early elections.

Speaking before Parliament, Prime Minister Jean-Claude Juncker declared that he had no other choice because the majority of the people wanted early elections. He also announced a cabinet meeting and planned to meet with Grand Duke Henri to propose a plan to hold elections on October 20th, seven months earlier than scheduled.

Despite being only 58 years old, Jean-Claude Juncker has been in power for the past 18 years, making him the longest-serving leader in Europe. He also recently completed his eight-year term as chairman of the Eurogroup of finance ministers. In a rare political scandal in Luxembourg, Parliament investigated reports alleging that the Secret Service, directly controlled by the prime minister, committed a series of wrongdoings between 2003 and 2009, including illegal phone tapping and corruption.

According to the report, Luxembourg's secret service compiled surveillance files on 13,000 individuals and businesses, illegally wiretapped businesspeople, and carried out an intelligence operation that helped a Russian billionaire pay $10 million to a Spanish spy…

The report also stated that Prime Minister Jean-Claude Juncker, in his capacity as head of the Secret Service, had failed to effectively manage the agency and had not informed Parliament about the Secret Service's misconduct.

Meanwhile, the opposition argues that Jean-Claude Juncker is too preoccupied with resolving the Eurozone crisis and is neglecting the governance of the country.
