Floating nuclear power plant
The Russian government will operate several floating nuclear power plants within the next three years to supply electricity to remote areas.
In fact, Russia's floating nuclear power plant will be located on a special type of ship. In addition to electricity, the ship will also provide clean water and heat to areas inaccessible by road.

The director of the Baltic Shipyard, Russia's largest shipbuilding facility, announced that the shipyard's specialists are building a nuclear power plant carrier. It will be showcased at the 6th International Maritime Exhibition in St. Petersburg in 2016. Akademik Lomonosov will be the name of the first version in this class of ships, Russia Today reports.
Akademik Lomonosov's mission is to supply electricity and water to port cities, offshore oil and gas platforms. It possesses two KLT-40 nuclear reactors, which are used by Russian icebreakers. Each KLT-40 reactor can produce 70 MW of electricity – enough to serve the needs of 200,000 people – and 70 MW of heat.
Weighing in at 21,500 tons, the Akademik Lomonosov carries a crew of 69. It has no propulsion system, so it has to be towed to wherever it's needed.
Fifteen countries – including China, Argentina, and Indonesia – have expressed interest in Russia's floating nuclear power plant.
