Peanut kernels, peanut shells, as well as peanut branches and leaves, have long been used as medicinal ingredients in traditional Eastern medicine and folk remedies.

Modern studies show that peanuts have the following effects: increasing energy, nourishing the body, lowering blood pressure, reducing blood lipids, and stopping bleeding. The peanut shell (the hard outer shell of the peanut kernel, still used for cooking instead of firewood) also has the effect of lowering blood pressure and reducing blood lipids.

Besides lowering blood pressure and reducing blood lipids, peanut branches and leaves also have a calming effect and help combat insomnia. For people with high blood pressure, nervous exhaustion, or insomnia, they can be used in the following ways:

Treating nervous exhaustion

Use 100g of peanut leaves (or 40g of dried leaves and stems, possibly including fresh stems), put them in a pot, cover with water, bring to a boil, then simmer for another 10 minutes. Strain the liquid and divide into two portions to drink in the morning and evening. Liaoning Hospital (China) tested this remedy for insomnia, and the results showed that, generally, after 4-7 days of use, the majority of patients experienced a certain degree of improvement in sleep. The remedy also helps regulate blood pressure and serum cholesterol levels.

Treating hypertension and high cholesterol.

- Use peanuts with their skins intact, in appropriate quantities, raw (not roasted or boiled), put them in a jar, pour in enough vinegar to cover them completely, and soak for 5-7 days. They are then ready to use; consume twice a day, in the morning and evening, chewing and swallowing about 10-15 peanuts each time.

- Take 100g of peanut shells, boil them in water and drink the decoction as a substitute for tea throughout the day; or grind the peanut shells into a fine powder, sift it, and store it in a tightly sealed jar for later use; take 9g 2-3 times daily with warm water.

There are a few things to keep in mind when using peanuts: overuse can cause diarrhea, or dry eyes, mouth, or nose. People who are prone to constipation or loose stools due to cold and dampness stagnation should not use peanuts alone (they should be combined with other medicinal herbs). Additionally, moldy peanuts are prone to causing liver cancer and should not be used.
