Stop teaching students super-speed mental math

The Ministry of Education and Training said that currently, localities still have violations of regulations on extra teaching, extra learning, and assigning advanced exercises for primary school students to do in class or at home. Many preschools still teach ahead of the first grade curriculum. There is a phenomenon of teaching preschool children and primary school students a super-speed mental math program using an abacus not issued by the Ministry of Education and Training.

To end this phenomenon, the Ministry has just sent an official dispatch to its affiliated departments regarding the rectification of extra teaching, extra learning, pre-program teaching and advanced teaching in preschool and primary education.

Accordingly, the Ministry requires localities to disseminate to all preschool teachers, primary school teachers and schools to immediately stop the above violations, including asking for parents' opinions to teach the first grade program in advance and assign homework to students.

In addition, departments also need to raise awareness among parents in many forms, helping parents understand the harmful effects of extra classes, advanced classes, pre-curricular classes, and extracurricular classes.

Parents should avoid following the crowd mentality and expecting too much from their children, forcing them to study early, forcing them to do many reference exercises and advanced exercises.

Along with educating teachers and propagating to parents, the Ministry also requested departments to strengthen inspection, examination and supervision of teaching according to the knowledge and skills standards of the primary education program, strictly implement the preschool education program for children of each age, and not promote or market programs that have not been approved by the Ministry of Education and Training.

Violations of regulations on extra teaching, extra learning, use of reference materials in schools, and teaching management in educational institutions must be strictly handled./.
