Germany demands US explanation for wiretapping of Chancellor Merkel
Germany is extremely concerned about reports that US intelligence has been monitoring the mobile phone of its Prime Minister, Angela Merkel, for many years.
According to a VNA correspondent in Berlin, on October 23, Chancellor Merkel called US President Barack Obama to express her concerns. Ms. Merkel asked the US to thoroughly explain the extremely serious information related to the statement by US intelligence agencies that her mobile phone was also a target of surveillance.

According to German Government spokesman Steffen Seibert, if the above information is confirmed, it would be a completely unacceptable action, seriously eroding trust and need to stop immediately.
Chancellor Merkel's strong reaction came after a report in the Spiegel newspaper that the US secret service had been monitoring her phone for years. This information was also verified by the Federal Intelligence Service (BND) and the Federal Office for Information Security.
Responding to the above allegations, a spokesman for the US National Security Council said that President Obama affirmed to Chancellor Merkel that Washington does not monitor and will not do so with Ms. Merkel's communications./.
