Hardware industry grows strongly thanks to FDI

According to the 2013 Information Technology White Book recently completed by the Ministry of Information and Communications, Vietnam's hardware industry in 2012 grew strongly thanks to foreign direct investment (FDI) enterprises such as Samsung and Intel.

Figures from the 2013 Information Technology White Book show that total revenue of the information technology industry in 2012 reached 25.5 billion USD, an increase of more than 86% compared to 2011. Of which, the hardware and electronics industry reached over 23 billion USD in revenue, an increase of more than 103% compared to 2011 and accounted for more than 90.4% of the total revenue of the information technology industry.

The Ministry of Information and Communications said that Vietnam's hardware industry grew strongly in 2012 thanks to Samsung's phone factory in Bac Ninh and Intel's semiconductor chip factory in Ho Chi Minh City.

Export of information and communication technology products in 2012 reached 22.92 billion USD, an increase of more than 110% compared to 2011.

In addition, the 2013 Information Technology White Book said that a rapidly growing field is pay television. In just the past year, the number of pay television subscribers in Vietnam has nearly doubled with total revenue reaching over 200 million USD, of which cable television accounts for 97% of revenue. The number of cable television subscribers and digital terrestrial television are the services with the largest number of subscribers, reaching 4.4 million and 3.6 million respectively. SCTV accounts for 36.26% of the cable television market share, followed by VTVCab with 22.67%... In the field of digital satellite television, VSTV and VTC are two providers with quite close market shares of over 43%, AVG accounts for 13.36% of the market share.

In addition, the White Book also published figures on the development of Vietnam's telephone market in 2012, such as VNPT's fixed telephone service accounting for 75%, an increase of nearly 69% compared to 2011; Viettel's accounting for 23%, an increase of 22.3% compared to 2011... Viettel accounts for 40% of the mobile telephone service market share, followed by MobiFone with 21.4% market share, VinaPhone with nearly 20% market share, and Vietnamobile with 11%.

Regarding internet services, both fixed and mobile access, VNPT accounts for nearly 63%, Viettel accounts for more than 29%, and FPT accounts for nearly 6%.

It is known that this is the 5th year that the 2013 Information Technology White Book has been published to provide information and data in the fields of information and communication technology for domestic and international organizations and individuals.

Providing information to the press about the 2013 White Book, Mr. Tran Nguyen Chung, Department of Information Technology, Ministry of Information and Communications said that, in addition to the same content as every year, the 2013 White Book also adds many additional contents such as evaluations and rankings of a number of international organizations on the Vietnamese information and communications technology industry.

Specifically, in terms of information and communication technology development index, Vietnam ranked 81/161 countries, 4th in Southeast Asia; connectivity readiness index ranked 84/144 countries, 5th in Southeast Asia; in terms of information technology industry, Vietnam ranked 8th in the world in software outsourcing (according to the report of Tholons Group), ranked in the top 10 countries in Asia - Pacific and ranked in the top 30 countries in the world in software outsourcing (according to the report of Gartner Group); in terms of e-government ranking, Vietnam ranked 4th in Southeast Asia and 81/190 countries; Vietnam ranked in the top 10 Asian countries with the fastest growth rate of Internet users, ranked 3rd in Southeast Asia, 8th in Asia and 18th in the world in the number of Internet users...

Speaking at a meeting before the release of the 2013 White Book, Deputy Minister of Information and Communications Nguyen Minh Hong said that in addition to the bilingual Vietnamese-English publication, the 2012 White Book has been completed by VISTA Publishing House (Japan) in bilingual Japanese-English for release in Japan to meet the interests of organizations and businesses in this country with Vietnam's information and communications technology industry.
