Bundesliga curtain falls: Schalke wins Champions League ticket

May 19, 2013 16:51

Schalke 04 have successfully secured a ticket to participate in the Champions League next season, with a 2-1 victory over direct rival Freiburg. Meanwhile, Augsburg have successfully squeezed through the narrow door to stay in the Bundesliga.

Draxler opened the scoring for the visitors in the first half. In the second half, Schmid rekindled the opportunity for the home team Freiburg with an equalizer in the 54th minute of the match. However, Schuster himself extinguished Freiburg's hopes with an unfortunate own goal just 4 minutes later.

With this result, Schalke 04 has 54 points, becoming the last representative to register for the Champions League next season of Bundesliga after champion Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen. Freiburg and Frankfurt will be the two representatives of Bundesliga in Europa League next season.

Schalke 04 won a ticket to the Champions League.

While the race for a Champions League ticket is a private matter between Schalke 04 and Freiburg, the relegation battle is also a private matter between FC Augsburg and Fortuna Dusseldorf.

Before the final round, both teams were equal on points (30 points) but Dusseldorf was the team with the advantage thanks to their superior secondary index. Apart from these two teams, in theory, Hoffenheim could still stay in the league but the chance is very small. The necessary condition is that Hoffenheim must win in the final round and the sufficient condition is that both FC Augsburg and Fortuna Dusseldorf must lose.

Hoffenheim fulfilled the condition by beating runners-up Dortmund 2-1, but only half way, as Fortuna Dusseldorf surprisingly lost 0-3 at Hannover, while Augsburg won 3-1 against the relegated team Fuerth.

With this result, Augsburg has successfully escaped relegation with 33 points, Hoffenheim (31 points) will have to play the play-off match and Dusseldorf (30 points) will sadly be relegated to the second division next season.

Augsburg narrowly avoided relegation.

On the final day, Bayern continued their impressive streak with a dramatic 4-3 victory over Monchengladbach. This victory helped Jupp Heynckes and his team finish the season with 91 points, the highest score in Bundesliga history.

In addition, Bayern Munich also set a series of other records such as the team with the highest goal difference (+80), the team that won the championship the earliest (6 rounds), the team that won the championship with the most points ahead of the remaining group (25 points compared to runner-up Dortmund)...
