At 8:30 AM, after doing laundry on the rooftop of Mr. Nguyen Hoang Hai's four-story house on Ngo Quyen Street (Nguyen Nghiem Ward, Quang Ngai City), Ms. Nguyen Thi Luan (28 years old) reportedly took a makeshift elevator (used for transporting goods) down to the ground floor. Midway down to the mezzanine level, Ms. Luan's head became trapped in the elevator shaft.
Seeing that the maid was taking a long time to come down to cook and wasn't responding when he called, Mr. Hai went up the stairs to the rooftop to look for Ms. Luan. However, when he reached the mezzanine floor, the homeowner was horrified to discover Ms. Luan dead, lying on her back with her head trapped in the gap of the elevator floor.
According to Major Pham Duc Dung, Deputy Head of Nguyen Nghiem Ward Police, Mr. Hai's family runs a business selling plastic household goods near the central wholesale market of Quang Ngai province. Normally, the winch-like bar is used to move goods up and down.
Ms. Luận, from Quỳnh Lưu district (Nghệ An province), had recently moved to Lê Hồng Phong ward (Quảng Ngãi city) with her husband to live and work. The victim had only been working as a domestic helper for Mr. Hải's family for one month.
This afternoon, Ms. Luan's body was brought back to her hometown for burial. This unusual accident caused a stir among hundreds of small traders along Ngo Quyen, Nguyen Ba Loan, Le Dinh Can, and Nguyen Nghiem streets. Many curious onlookers flocked to the scene, causing traffic congestion for hours. The cause of the incident is currently under investigation by the Quang Ngai City Police.
Previously, on May 2nd, Ha Quoc Oai (17 years old, residing in District 10, Ho Chi Minh City), a worker at a facility specializing in the production of bolts and screws in a 5-story building in alley 138 Ngo Quyen (Ward 5, District 10), also died under similar circumstances.
According to initial investigations, at around 9 am, Oai entered a cargo elevator. When the elevator reached approximately the 4th floor, Oai stuck his head out to press a button and became trapped, dying instantly. Police and rescue workers from District 1 spent over 3 hours using cutting tools to extricate the body of the deceased worker.
