The US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) announced on July 15 that they had discovered a new mini-moon orbiting Neptune.

According to AFP, this is the 14th "natural satellite" orbiting Neptune, the planet farthest from the Sun in the solar system.

Scientists say it is the smallest moon yet discovered around Neptune, called S/2004N1, and estimate its diameter is just 12 miles (19 km), with a brightness 100 million times dimmer than the darkest star visible to the human eye.

According to NASA, astronomers found this moon by tracking a white dot that appeared repeatedly in more than 150 photos taken by the Hubble Telescope between 2004 and 2009.

Scientist Mark Showalter of the SETI Institute in Mountain View, California (USA), discovered the small moon S/2004N1 on July 1 while studying the faint arcs around Neptune./.
