Summary of medical coordination activities in tuberculosis prevention

(Baonghean.vn) -On the morning of September 5, the Department of Health held a summary of the project activities "Public-private health collaboration to support the strategy to prevent tuberculosis in Nghe An". Attending the event were representatives of PATH in Vietnam.

In Nghe An, it is estimated that there are 3,300 tuberculosis patients of all types every year. About 70% of tuberculosis patients have been detected, while about 30% of tuberculosis patients have not been detected and treated. This is a dangerous source of infection for the community.

From October 2010 to September 2013, the TB prevention program implemented the project "Public-Private Health Cooperation in Tuberculosis Prevention in Nghe An" (abbreviated as PPM) in 6 localities: Vinh City, Cua Lo Town, Dien Chau, Nghi Loc, Yen Thanh and Quynh Luu.

The project has deployed TB diagnostic testing points at 9 district and provincial general hospitals; 408 facilities have participated in referral of TB suspects (of which 205 facilities have referred TB suspects); 3,788/8,743 patients were detected with TB at participating public and private health facilities; the number of patients coming to TB facilities for TB testing and diagnosis was 3,534/6,421 people (of which 259/703 TB cases were identified, accounting for 11%); the number of TB patients receiving HIV counseling and testing was 244/538 people (77%), of which 21/31 TB patients were found to be HIV positive (68%)...

Speaking at the conference, Dr. Bui Dinh Long - Director of the Department of Health acknowledged that public and private hospitals, general clinics, private clinics and pharmacies in 6 districts have actively participated in the project, contributing to detecting and transferring TB patients to treatment at state-run TB treatment facilities, reducing the risk of infection in the community. In the coming time, he requested that the Tuberculosis and Lung Disease Hospital and district and provincial hospitals coordinate better, provide effective professional support to the facilities; consolidate and enhance monitoring activities, promptly reward and commend positive factors. He requested that PATH continue to support the Nghe An health sector in the coming time to expand the project to 2 districts of Nam Dan and Thanh Chuong and plan to expand to 4 more districts and towns in the 2014 - 2015 period: Do Luong, Thai Hoa town, Nghia Dan and Hung Nguyen.

On this occasion, the Director of the Department of Health also commended and presented gifts to 15 individuals who actively participated in the project.
