Completed temporary purchase of 1 million tons of rice equivalent

VFA said that as of August 15, domestic enterprises had completed the plan to temporarily purchase and store 1 million tons of rice from the 2013 Summer-Autumn crop and achieved the goal of raising and maintaining rice prices at a high level.

During this period, the Vietnam Food Association (VFA) assigned temporary purchase targets to 114 enterprises. According to the association's preliminary assessment, although the enterprises have not yet submitted full reports, they have basically completed the assigned targets. The association will not propose to extend the purchase deadline because the basic goals of consuming commercial rice, raising prices and maintaining rice prices... have met the set requirements.

According to the plan of the Department of Crop Production, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, in August, the Summer-Autumn rice crop with an area of ​​about 680,000 hectares will be basically planned, the rice output will be about 1,870,000 tons, of which 1,512,000 tons of commercial rice, accounting for more than 40% of the commercial rice volume of this crop (3,320,800 tons).

However, according to a leader of VFA, as of August 15, the amount of rice in the Mekong Delta region is not much and when businesses do not buy and store it, domestic rice prices will hardly decrease deeply, if they do decrease, it will only decrease slightly.

Regarding the issue of temporary storage, there are still many opinions on how to implement it, many of which suggest that there should be separate plans for each locality to suit the harvest time.
