The Sochi 2014 Olympic torch embarked on a record-breaking journey.

In just a few hours, the Olympic flame of the 22nd Sochi 2014 Winter Games will be lit.

To reach the Olympic flame, the Sochi 2014 Olympic torch underwent a record-breaking and incredibly exciting journey.

Beginning on October 6, 2013, in Moscow, the torch was carried through the capitals of all 83 of Russia's constituent entities, visiting 2,900 settlements over 123 days. The total distance covered by the torch was more than 65,000 km.

Remarkably, this torch has reached the Arctic, the bottom of Lake Baikal, the summit of Everest, been taken to the International Space Station (ISS), and, for the first time in history, been launched into outer space.

The Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics – the biggest sporting event in Russia since the Cold War – will officially open tonight, February 7th.

Approximately 6,000 athletes, coaches, and officials from 90 countries will participate in 98 events from February 7th to 23rd.

The Sochi Olympics attracted many of the world's top athletes at the time, such as Kim Yu-Na (figure skating), Bode Miller (skiing), Sidney Crosby, Alex Ovechkin (ice hockey), Margot Boer (speed skating), etc.
